Decommissioning of 2G networks
8 Oct, 2024

Dear valued Teflon Connect Client,

We have recently noticed a degradation in the 2G network that carries the data from our (and most tracking products currently in the marketplace) tracking devices.

On investigating, we were informed that ICASA has instructed the cellular networks that the 2G networks are to be decommissioned in 2027.  We believe that this has resulted in them dropping the priority of maintenance on those components, resulting in “holes” in the network.

For that reason, Teflon Connect has started advising our clients to use 4G devices for new installations and where devices need to be replaced.  Unfortunately, these devices are a bit more expensive, but the monthly subscriptions will remain the same as for the 2G devices.

If the efficiency of the network is impacting your business operation, but you are not yet ready for the upgrade costs, we can suggest replacing the current SIM cards with roaming SIM cards, which will allow the devices to use whichever network is most effective in that area at that time.  There will be a call-out cost for the SIM swap, and a nominal increase in the monthly subscription.

If you would like a quotation for this option, please send us an email to support@teflonconnect.com.
